Earth Day is Every Day at White and Elm

Earth Day is Every Day at White and Elm

April 21, 2017

Hello Beautiful!

Have you ever thought about how your skin care products or cosmetics affect the Earth? With Earth Day approaching, it is the perfect reminder how important it is and how easy it is, to make small changes to your daily routine, as well as your skin care routine, to help the earth 365 days a year. When you think of Earth Day and conserving our environment, you probably think about zero-emission vehicles, carpooling, planting trees, riding bicycles, turning the lights out when you leave a room, shutting the air conditioner off and opening a window. However, you also must keep in mind that the skin care and cosmetics products that you use daily may also be hurting the environment as well. When you use skin care products, whether we’re talking about cleansers, moisturizers, or makeup products, you’re going to eventually wash them off.

Now, there are those environmental pollutants and chemicals that you may not be able to control (smog, car exhaust, radiation), and then there are those that you can, depending on what you choose to buy, ingest or apply to my skin. Remember that your skin is your largest organ! At least 80% of anything you put on your skin, goes in your body. So, choose wisely by choosing products with a short ingredient list, that do not contain so many chemicals. Keep an eye out for products that list Parabens, Artificial Fragrance or Colors, Petrolatum, Phthalates, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate on the ingredient panel. If a product contains any of these ingredients, it is likely you are absorbing unnecessary chemicals into your body. When you wash away natural, organic ingredients, you’ll rest assured to know that you’re not introducing anything harmful back into the ecosystem.

It’s obvious that we, the White & Elm team are passionate about natural and non-toxic, plant-based skin care. We believe that no woman should have to compromise her health for her beauty. Naturally, WE focus on doing right by the environment around us and the environment of our bodies. We proudly participate in the Environmental Working Group's EWG Verified™ program. Their mission at Environmental Working Group to use the power of information to protect human health and the environment. EWG's Skin Deep database gives you practical solutions to protect yourself and your family from everyday exposures to chemicals. For example, the U.S. government does not require safety testing of personal care items before they hit store shelves. Companies can use almost any ingredient – including potentially harmful ones in their products.  The EWG VERIFIED™ mark makes it easier for people to choose products they can trust for their health. The EWG VERIFIED: For Your Health™ mark will help shoppers quickly and easily identify personal care products, including cosmetics, that meet EWG’s strictest standards while shopping in stores and online. Items bearing the mark must score in the “green” range in EWG’s Skin Deep® cosmetics database and meet additional criteria set by EWG scientists. Learn more about the EWG Verified™ program and White & Elm's scores at EWG's Skin Deep®.

White & Elm is also a proud business member of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. Since 2004, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics has used smarts and sass to pressure the cosmetics industry to make safer products. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics coalition, a project of the Breast Cancer Fund, works to protect the health of consumers, workers, and the environment through public education and engagement, corporate accountability and sustainability campaigns and legislative advocacy designed to eliminate dangerous chemicals linked to adverse health impacts from cosmetics and personal care products.

Are you an animal lover? WE are! Sadly enough, a lot of large skin care and cosmetic companies still test their products on animals. This cruel behavior may be legal, but it is immoral. When you purchase natural products, you can look for labels like “Cruelty Free” and “Vegan”, and you’ll know that your powder, moisturizer, serum, or facial cleanser wasn’t tested on animals before it got to you and that it’s completely safe to use without ever having harmed another living being. White & Elm is proud to be cruelty-free and vegan.  We do not test on animals and our formulations are free from animal products. We are proudly certified through PETA and Leaping Bunny. They are the best source for assurance the companies you choose to purchase from, as well as their laboratories and suppliers, use no new animal testing in any phase of product development. The Leaping Bunny Program empowers consumers and helps convince companies to move toward more effective in vitro testing methods that can truly protect humans with safer products while ending needless animal suffering.

Lastly, at White & Elm, our packaging is eco-conscious. We use minimal packaging with sustainable, biodegradable and reusable materials (primarily glass), giving you yet another way to decrease the size of your carbon footprint while enjoying healthy, beautiful skin care products. Our daily commitment to the environment and clean, healthy living means that here at White & Elm every day is Earth Day!

Keep up the fight for our mother earth!  Now more than ever she needs our support!

xoxo~

The White & Elm Team

The Key to Making Healthy Skincare Rituals
The Key to Making Healthy Skincare Rituals

May 07, 2017

Creating a daily skincare ritual for yourself gives you an opportunity to experience the moment. By committing to a ritual we not only see the immediate benefit for our skin, but we also begin to see patterns that evolve. Much like in yoga when your asana feels different from day-to-day. Only when you begin to see patterns can you begin to understand your skin.

While you may be cleansing, moisturizing, and applying sunscreen, daily. If you’re not exfoliating, your skin isn’t as healthy as it could be. It is very important to exfoliate your face and body all year round. But after the winter, sloughing away all that dead skin seems even more necessary.

For sure you need to be wearing a daily moisturizer with a minimum of an SPF 15.  You also need to look for sunscreens that are labeled Broad Spectrum because this means they have passed specific laboratory testing that shows they protect against both UVA and UVB rays.  If you plan to be in direct sun for more than a few hours, please reapply your sunscreen.  Also, if you are planning on swimming or sweating heavily opt for a Water-Proof formula as well.  It's best to avoid chemical sunscreens altogether because let's face it; we don't want the chemicals we put on our skin to end up in our blood stream. Also, because we don't yet know the impact that nanoparticles will have on our health, it's best to use mineral sunscreens that specifically use non-nano minerals.
